In a Wednesday X post, Cuban said he had “interesting conversation with the @KamalaHarris team about protecting American businesses from Chinese counterfeits.”
“Counterfeiting is the bane of small businesses, costing them time and money and potentially putting them out of business. Right now, all marketplace platforms do is help small businesses play whack-a-mole. I don’t think that’s enough,” Cuban added.
“Should we require marketplace platforms to vet all foreign manufacturers on their marketplaces who sell to U.S. consumers? Do you have any suggestions on the best approach?” he added.
Cuban did not say when the meeting took place or what further strategy was discussed.
Counterfeiters have found a way to capitalize on the rise of online shopping platforms: counterfeit goods cost U.S. businesses more than $200 billion a year and are responsible for the loss of 750,000 jobs, according to a report by the Office of the Coordinator for Intellectual Property Enforcement.
In February 2022, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced that China was the top country of origin for counterfeit goods seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“Kamala is focused on supporting and protecting American businesses from unfair foreign competition. Let me know what suggestions you have!,” Cuban wrote on Wednesday.
Representatives for Cuban and Harris’ campaigns did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.
This isn’t the first time Cuban has voiced his support for Harris’ economic policies: the “Shark Tank” star has been a vocal supporter of her since she took over as the Democratic nominee from President Joe Biden.
“I talk to them. I tell them I’m going to say what I think. They say, as long as you say you’re not speaking for us, you can do whatever you want,” Cuban told Axios about his conversations with the Harris campaign.
Cuban had previously expressed interest and support for Harris when she said she would lower drug prices “by cutting out the pharmacy middleman.”
The billionaire is hoping to achieve the same goal with Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs, a low-cost online pharmacy he co-founded in 2022.
“Kamala Harris is pro-business,” Cuban said in an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on September 5.
“She’s talked more about entrepreneurs and helping them access investment and making it easier for people to invest in startups than any president I’ve ever heard,” Cuban told CNBC host Andrew Ross Sorkin.
