The last Boeing 747 ever built has changed hands in front of thousands of people wanting to say goodbye to the iconic widebody aircraft. Customers, suppliers, celebrities, and current and former employees (including the first staff known as “The Incredibles” who built the first 747) to witness Boeing deliver planes to Atlas Air his worldwide ) gathered at the company’s Everett factory. The event marks the end of production of the aircraft since it was first built in 1967.

Boeing revealed in 2020 that it plans to phase out the model a few years after production on its last order is complete. The 747 is one of the world’s most famous four-engine wide-body jets. has revolutionized air travel by doubling passenger capacity and lowering the price of each seat. At the peak of its popularity in 1990, Boeing delivered 70 aircraft in a year. But like most older technology, it eventually lagged behind the company’s newer jets, especially those with two engines that could fly the same routes but use fuel more efficiently.

As Reuters The company has delivered only five 747s in 2022, but has built 1,574 across the program. Boeing’s last aircraft delivery, including this plane, will be used for cargo transport in the next few years. Yes, we don’t see the new 747 anymore, but bloomberg said orders for freighters could continue into the 2050s.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal said in a statement:

“This monumental day is a testament to generations of Boeing employees who brought the aircraft that ‘shrank the world’ to life and revolutionized travel and air cargo with the first widebody aircraft. It is fitting that we deliver our 747-8 Freighter to the world. At Atlas Air, the largest operator of the 747, the ‘Queen’ continues to inspire and power air cargo innovation.”

Kim Smith, Boeing’s vice president and general manager of the 747 and 767 programs, said the model’s production line had stopped as workers finished building various parts of the last plane. Employees who worked in the factory are now moving to other programs or voluntarily leaving the company.
