Community Notes launched as Birdwatch in 2021. It’s a “community-driven approach” that crowdsources fact-checks directly from other of her Twitter users. However, Twitter has laid off more content moderators than ever before, so we rely on them more than ever. Notes can be viewed by anyone in the world, but currently only users in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand can post.
Community notes cannot be trusted because they are crowdsourced. In a recent example, researchers investigating Twitter Blue noted that many high-profile accounts, including Tesla, have stopped subscribing to the service. A community note argued that Tesla was wrong because it was already a verified business and could not even register for Twitter Blue. However, our own data via Twitter’s official API shows that Tesla has indeed unsubscribed from his Twitter Blue, and the community note has since been removed.
