You’ve been playing side hustle for a while now. It’s still fun, but I’m wondering if it could be made more fun. And we believe that by making it “more fun,” we will “generate more business.”
It doesn’t have to be more business to push your side hustle into the full-time tier. Maybe it’s a few extra dollars a month.
How can you tell if you need to fix your side hustle along the way? The first thing you need to do is get comfortable with collecting data and comparing it to your goals.

Drafting a business plan only provides a baseline of expectations. Collecting real data can help you determine if your expectations were too high or if your performance was too low.

Your data doesn’t have to be complicated. After all, it’s a side business. Collect the ones you think are best suited to reveal what is most important to you.
“A side hustle is measured by the time and effort put into it,” says Kendra Gerain, an empowerment coach and spiritual mentor in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
How do you measure success in your side hustle?
What you are actually monitoring is a measure of success. You are answering the question, “Is my side hustle successful?” It has useful parameters, but be aware that different sidehustlers define success differently. We recommend that you identify your goals for each of these benchmarks by looking at your usual measurements.
Pini Shemesh, co-founder and CEO of MyTower in Tel Aviv, Israel, said: “Common metrics for measuring side hustle success include:
- Revenue and Profit: This is a simple measure of how much money your side hustle makes and how much is retained as profit.
- Time Invested vs. Return on Investment (ROI): This measures how much time and effort is spent on your side hustle compared to monetary returns.
- Personal Satisfaction and Accomplishment: For some, success in a side hustle may be less about financial rewards and more about personal satisfaction and enjoyment from doing business . “
What does course correction mean in business?
Part of your definition of success is at what point “close enough is enough”. If you’re out of that range on either side of your goal, it’s time to think about whether you should change what you’re doing in the side hustle.
Look at the milestones you have selected in your business plan. Are they hitting as expected? If not, tweak something and see if that brings you closer.

How do you modify your course?
You’re tracking data about your business, and you need to know where that data needle is moving. Again, keep it simple. Maybe all you need is your bank statement.
“I don’t typically put a lot of effort into tracking profitability in my side business. As one Ali Smith put it: “If it’s profitable, it’s on track and shows the potential to increase and grow.”
If you notice that certain months generate more revenue, remember what you did that month. For example, if you’re a content creator that sells related goods and services, you might find that you earn more money the month after your content spikes. In that case, you can increase your content output, usually in the slow months, and see if that improves your sales.
Maybe that’s not what you did. It may have been the environment. For example, if a side hustle product is the perfect Christmas gift, you’ll see more income on your January statement. So you should stop working hard in March and shift some of that energy into his September to focus on the upcoming gift-buying season.
How do you build a successful side hustle?

“The most successful side hustle is the one where people decide to embody the identity of that side hustle,” says Dielle Charon, a sales and money mindset coach in Raleigh, North Carolina. Instead of saying, “Oh, that’s my side business,” people need to take on the role. If they also have a 9-5, they can be two things at the same time. We see more success when we adopt the ‘stay in the hustle’ mentality. “
