Duolingo can be added to the list of companies jumping on the generative AI bandwagon. On Wednesday, the company announced is a new, more expensive subscription tier that gives you access to a pair of GPT-4 features. The first, “Explain My Answer,” lets you ask Duo, the chatbot named after the company’s owl mascot, to elaborate on whether your answer to a question is correct or incorrect. Need more help?
The second feature, Roleplay, allows you to practice the skills you learned in Duolingo in several scenarios. For example, one session asks you to order food and drinks at a cafe in Paris. According to Duolingo, even if he rehearses a situation more than once, no two conversations are exactly the same, and users earn experience points for completing practice sessions.
Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn said: “We are very excited to share these exciting new features with millions of his Duolingo learners.”
Duolingo has been working on Duolingo Max since 2022. This was done as part of a partnership in which OpenAI earlier granted the company access to the new GPT-4 model. Thankfully, Duolingo is fully aware of his GPT-4 language abilities. “We’ve been working closely with OpenAI for months to test and train this technology, and we plan to keep doing this until we’ve made very few mistakes.” You can also rate your Explain My Answer session by providing an up and down emoji.
Starting today, Duolingo Max is available to English-speaking iOS users learning Spanish and French. In the US, the service costs $30/month or $168/year. It comes with all the features that are part of Duolingo’s existing Super subscription, including unlimited hearts and no ads.
