Kamala Harris dodged Stephen Colbert’s question about the Willow oil drilling project just approved by President Joe Biden, pointing out that Biden promised on the campaign trail that he would not approve any new drilling projects on federal land. .
On Wednesday night’s episode of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Colbert first asked Harris What are the key issues defining the upcoming 2024 election, where Biden and Harris are expected to run for re-election?
She said her administration plans to continue “building on the momentum it has achieved to date,” pointing to the $1 trillion it has invested in the climate crisis.
Mr. Colbert acknowledged this priority in his administration, but said Mr. Biden had promised “not to issue new drilling licenses on public lands” during the campaign.
The project, a massive oil drilling mission in Alaska, has been opposed by many Americans, with some claiming that Biden broke his election promises by approving it.
“What’s the calculation there?” Colbert asked the Vice President.
Instead of answering him bluntly about the project, Harris again pointed out all the progress their administration has made in support of the climate crisis.
“I understand the concerns so far, but looking at what our administration has done, this is historic in terms of investing in the clean energy economy,” she began to respond.
She added that she would “put America back on the map globally” in terms of investing in the country’s future.
“We’ve been very bold in the progress we’ve made so far,” Harris continued.
Colbert asked about the blow the Biden-Harris administration is currently facing with the approval of the Willow Project.
Harris again said he understands why people are concerned, but the solution must come through investment.
After shoving her three times, Harris still wouldn’t say whether Biden had broken his campaign promises and urged Colbert to continue the interview.
