As the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco wrapped up last week, there was one game that stood out from the rest. His shrapnel, the highly anticipated first-person shooter his game in the Web3 space, was the talk of the conference thanks to its stunning graphics and immersive gameplay.
Some visitors were able to get hands-on with the pre-alpha version of the game. Set in 2044, Shrapnel is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Players must navigate a “sacrifice zone” where they collect NFT gear and a compound named Sigma. They can win by reaching an extraction point where they can escape with their loot. When they die, they lose their loot.
Shrapnel founder Mark Long told Cointelegraph at GDC that gameplay is first and foremost for his team. This time the demo was held behind closed doors, but he added that more people will be able to play Shrapnel next month.
“Anyone from ConsenSys can play on the show floor,” he says, referring to a conference in Austin, Texas, in late April.
EVE Online, MapleStory Gets Web3 Treatment
While Shrapnel was in the spotlight, EVE Online creator CCP Games announced it had raised $40 million in a round led by a16z to develop a new AAA title set in the EVE universe. bottom.
EVE Online is a space-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Launched in 2003, the game includes over 7,000 solar systems and 20 years of player-created history. Players can choose their path and profession in-game, focusing on combat, mining, exploration, and industry while interacting with a complex in-game economy and hierarchy.
Not a game for the faint of heart. Some people describe playing games as a side job. Additionally, the rising cost of playing EVE Online has long been a point of contention between the player and his CCP games.
Every time a Web2 game studio expresses interest in Web3 (think Neopets Metaverse, for example), the fear among players is that it’s nothing more than a cynical cash grab.
Details of the blockchain EVE game have yet to be revealed, but the company has clarified that it will not affect EVE’s global servers, known as Tranquility. Last year, the company announced that it had no plans to add blockchain technology to Tranquility.
The company’s CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson said at the time: “We are interested in this technology, but NFT stands for ‘Not for Tranquility’.

The project’s website, which suggests the name “Project Awakening,” states that the game is “separate from current and previously published projects, including EVE Online.”
It’s not just traditional gaming brands that recently announced they’re jumping on the Web3 bandwagon. His game company, Nexon, is bringing the popular game MapleStory to the blockchain.
With over 260 million players, the game lets players explore deserts, tundra, underwater kingdoms, lost civilizations, and more. The Korean company follows other players in the region, including Square Enix and Bandai Namco, who previously dabbled in his Web3.

Bazooka Tango wants the indie card game Shardbound back
The indie game Shardbound is also getting a Web3 revival from game studio Bazooka Tango. Shardbound, a tactics card game, was originally launched via Kickstarter. However, it was never fully released and interest waned.
According to the company’s co-founder Stephen Sherman, that’s when Bazooka Tango came along and decided to give it a new lease of life.
“The developers of SpiritWalk are very close friends of ours and we have always been fans of the product,” Sherman told Cointelegraph.
We talked about picking up where we left off and making it the last mile, given the opportunity, so we had a chance to reach a global audience. ”
The Shardbound Beta will be generally available around mid-2023 and will be available on mobile in 2024.
Otherside’s second trip to Fortnite
Yuga Labs’ Otherside returned for a second trip on March 25th. The event saw more than 7,200 concurrent players of his on the platform, and Improbable, the company behind the tech, once again showed off its impressive capabilities.
Unlike its first trip last summer, the latest iteration had a little more gameplay beyond the backflip-running avatar. Participants in the second trip teamed up to collect blobs. The winning team, Team Glacia, won the virtual winged helmet.
It didn’t take long for Fortnite comparisons to kick off on Crypto Twitter, both positive and negative. But – at this time last year, Otherside was just a rumor and officially launched at the end of April – but others say the comparison is inaccurate and unhelpful.
It’s not yet clear what Yuga Labs plans to do with gameplay. But then again, there are so many ways virtual objects can be collected before it all starts to feel the same, as Game Fund partner Jonah Blake tweeted:
The other side is not competing with Fortnite creatives. they are two different things. They both vie for attention, and attention will either be on the deed or on Fortnite Island. Brands post on them all.
Following the second trip, Yuga Labs has announced some new updates. First, it looks like the company will partner with Gucci for something related to The Other Side.
In addition, Legend of the Mara is also deployed. According to Yuga Labs, this is his collection-based 2D strategy game and picks up where the events of Second Trip left off.
“This will allow you to learn more about Kodas, including its origins and its first relationship with the Otherside, meet new apprentices in the form of Mara, and learn more about The Otherside’s story through LOTM,” the Otherside tweeted. Did.

NFT marketplace Magic Eden began pivoting into gaming last year and finally rolled out a gaming hub this month.
According to gaming CEO Chris Arkhavan, the idea is to turn the platform into a Web3 gaming hub where users can discover new games, buy NFTs and view leaderboards. We don’t host any games on our platform, but we do have plans for more community-focused integrations in the future.
Hot Take — Undead Block
“So, Bitcoin today?”
I don’t think you’ll hear it first when you’re nervously roaming your neighborhood in Sanborn, New York, waiting for zombies to inevitably come down, but it helps ease the nerves a bit. I think your character yelling “to the moon” is the best roar of all.
The beta of Undead Blocks, released on ImmutableX by Wagyu Games and Kevuru, launched last month. Called the “Kill to Earn” game, his director of Wagyu Games executive Grant Haseley, a former Goldman Sachs analyst, created an easy-to-learn and addictive game that you can play with your friends. I set out to create.
Easy for anyone but me. I have the hand-eye coordination of her drunken 3-year-old and am far more at ease planting potatoes in Stardew Her Valley than trying to survive the apocalypse.
Reducing mouse sensitivity by about 90% slightly improves handling of the awkward pistol. At least she no longer dies after killing one of her zombies.
That said, I can still appreciate that it looks cool. I’ve also heard positive reviews from people who have used game controllers (you can use controllers for Xbox or Playstation) as opposed to Macs.
Overall, the look and general playability of blockchain games are much better than they were a year ago, and Undead Blocks is no exception. There are crisp graphics, a cool soundtrack in the intro, and a somewhat amusing way of musing from Avatar about crypto.
