Optimism, a layer 2 scaling solution, will receive the long-awaited Bedrock upgrade on June 6th. The move is expected to significantly reduce transaction fees, improve network security, and improve compatibility with Ethereum.
The Optimism team said in a Twitter thread on May 15th that the network will be down for two to four hours on June 6th as the upgrade is completed.
“On the day of the upgrade, you will not be able to trade, deposit, or withdraw during the downtime, and the OP mainnet chain will not progress,” the accompanying blog post said.
The official date for the upgrade to Bedrock on the OP mainnet has been set at 16:00 UTC on June 6, 2023.
The upgrade requires 2-4 hours of downtime on OP Mainnet.

Bedrock will be announced in May 2022 and will be the first major network upgrade voted on by the Token House of the Optimism Governance Council.
Optimism will benefit from lower transaction fees by OP Labs, the network’s protocol development arm. Estimate 47% less.

Another key improvement concerns network compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the core software that runs Ethereum smart contracts.

ZK Sync Era Overtakes Optimism?
The upcoming move to Bedrock comes at a time when EVM-compatible zero-knowledge rollups (ZkEVM) are gaining traction from optimistic rollup solutions such as Optimism.

Matter Labs’ recently launched ZkEVM ZKSync Era outperformed Optimism in terms of network activity, according to L2beat data.
Over the past 30 days, ZKSync Era had 7.85 million transactions, compared to 7.66 million for Optimism. Over the past 24 hours, ZKSync Era also outperformed Optimism in average transactions per second (TPS) at 6.80 TPS versus 2.98 TPS.
