Optimism, a layer 2 scaling solution, will receive the long-awaited Bedrock upgrade on June 6th. The move is expected to significantly reduce transaction fees, improve network security, and improve compatibility with Ethereum.

The Optimism team said in a Twitter thread on May 15th that the network will be down for two to four hours on June 6th as the upgrade is completed.

“On the day of the upgrade, you will not be able to trade, deposit, or withdraw during the downtime, and the OP mainnet chain will not progress,” the accompanying blog post said.

Bedrock will be announced in May 2022 and will be the first major network upgrade voted on by the Token House of the Optimism Governance Council.

Optimism will benefit from lower transaction fees by OP Labs, the network’s protocol development arm. Estimate 47% less.

“Bedrock improves on its predecessor by using optimized batch compression and Ethereum as a data availability layer to reduce transaction fees. It reduces the latency of including L1 transactions in uploads,” said Bedrock commentator from the Optimism community.

In addition to this, the network’s deposit time has also been reduced, with Optimism taking about 10 minutes to confirm deposits, and Bedrock’s just 3 minutes, said the explainer.

On the other hand, the performance of the node software is significantly improved by allowing multiple transactions to be executed in a single rollup “block” as opposed to the “one transaction per block” model of previous versions. improve. ”

Another key improvement concerns network compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the core software that runs Ethereum smart contracts.

With Bedrock, the network removes the “multiple deviations” from Ethereum and EVM that currently exist in optimism, such as different code, design patterns, and block-by-block transaction models. “Bedrock will also add support for EIP-1559, chain reorganization, and other Ethereum features present in L1,” said the explainer.

ZK Sync Era Overtakes Optimism?

The upcoming move to Bedrock comes at a time when EVM-compatible zero-knowledge rollups (ZkEVM) are gaining traction from optimistic rollup solutions such as Optimism.

Matter Labs’ recently launched ZkEVM ZKSync Era outperformed Optimism in terms of network activity, according to L2beat data.

Over the past 30 days, ZKSync Era had 7.85 million transactions, compared to 7.66 million for Optimism. Over the past 24 hours, ZKSync Era also outperformed Optimism in average transactions per second (TPS) at 6.80 TPS versus 2.98 TPS.
