The announcement of the 2024 BMW 5 Series has caught the public’s attention.
Now in its eighth generation, the BMW 5 Series offers a revolutionary new feature that allows drivers to change lanes simply by looking in their side mirrors.
An optional part of the Highway Assistance Level 2 driver assistance suite, Active Lane Change Assist allows the car to automatically change lanes. Here’s how it works:
- The system will first ask you to suggest a lane change. This could be because you are approaching a slower vehicle or you are nearing the end of your lane and need to merge.
- With Active Lane Change Assist, the driver simply looks in the side mirrors and the car changes lanes as long as it is safe to do so.
Other vehicles, such as GM’s SuperCruise system, have an auto lane change option, but require you to physically accept instructions using turn signals. BMW takes that step out of the process and lets the eyes control the steering.

some concerns
Not everyone is a fan of this new feature. motor trendsFor example, I questioned the safety of steering with eye control.
“I would be lying if I wasn’t worried at all,” wrote the car magazine. “The reality is that moving your hand a few inches to touch the stem is not a difficult process, and it is much less likely that the car will misinterpret that action. You have to try it.” Please review it to see for yourself. ”
First electric 5 series
The eye-controlled lane-changing system wasn’t the only big announcement from BMW this week. The German automaker also announced the debut of two all-electric 5 Series models.
The i5 eDrive40 has 335 horsepower and provides approximately 300 miles of EPA range on a single charge. Sticker prices start at $67,795.
At the high end is the 5 M60 xDrive, a two-motor, 590-horsepower machine. You will have to pay at least $85,095 for this.
