After years of speculation, Apple today announced its first spatial computer, the Apple Vision Pro. Tim Cook revealed this during the 2023 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, sharing many exciting features that could change the way we look at mixed reality technology.
Launching early next year, the Apple Vision Pro is an XR device that can blend virtual elements with the real world. Apple says the sleek-looking headset is designed for both work and play, offering a vast catalog of productivity and entertainment apps available from the new Vision Pro App Store. The device is also compatible with many existing iPhone and iPad games and apps available in the standard App Store.
controller
Use your eyes, voice, or hands to interact with your headset instead of motion controllers. However, Apple Vision Pro is compatible with many Bluetooth devices such as Magic Keyboard and Trackpad. With this device, you can strategize with colleagues from anywhere in the world, sit back and enjoy a 3D movie on the giant 100ft screen, connect a gamepad to play over 100 Apple Arcade games, and more. Access your Mac, iPhone, and iPad devices via multiple channels. Mixed reality screens, etc.
design
Apple Vision Pro features a modern compact design that houses two ultra-high-definition displays, a spatial audio system, and an Apple Silicon 2 chip design. The device is powered by a small external battery with a battery life of 2 hours (or a full day of use when plugged in). There are physical buttons that can be used to capture spatial video and photos (more on that later), as well as a series of sensors that track your hands and the real world.
A three-dimensionally molded laminated glass is wrapped around the front to achieve a sense of transparency. When someone approaches the headset, it automatically displays a 3D replica of his eye using built-in eye-tracking technology. Apple calls this feature “EyeSight”. According to the company, EyeSight enables more natural interactions with others while wearing the headset. It can also let people outside the headset know what you’re focusing on, like a movie or meeting.
The Apple Reality Pro promises a customizable ergonomic design for comfortable long-term use. This includes a highly ventilated headband that can be easily adjusted using the fit dial. It also comes with a light seal to prevent light leakage. At the top of the headset is a Digital Crown that can be used to display the home view and adjust the level of immersion when using Environments (more on that later).
Vision OS
Apple’s new visionOS includes a new 3D interface designed exclusively for Apple Vision Pro that lets you use your eyes, hands and voice to browse your collection of games and apps. 3D elements appear realistic in the real world. They can even cast shadows of themselves in response to light. The aforementioned Digital Crown can also be used to blend the real world with a variety of gorgeous virtual environments captured using 3D volumetric techniques.
Speaking of 3D, the Apple Vision Pro features Apple’s first 3D camera to capture 180-degree spatial videos and photos that are always accessible via your photo library on iCloud. You can also surround yourself with wide panoramic photos taken with your iPhone. But 3D technology doesn’t stop there.
Persona
Apple Vision Pro can actually scan your face and use machine learning technology to create a digital “persona” that mimics your facial and hand movements. So whether you’re on his FaceTime call with a family member or chatting with a colleague on Zoom, you’ll see yourself as a realistic 3D avatar. Meanwhile, users connecting via mobile or desktop are shown on top of the real world environment via 2D tiles. However, if you’re chatting with another Apple Vision Pro user of his, you’ll see a 3D version of him in their respective personas.
Anyone interested in creating personas must register with Apple to access this feature.
Security and privacy
In terms of security, the Apple Vision Pro features an Optic ID system that scans your iris while exposed to LED light and compares it to enrolled Optic ID data before granting access to the device. This data is encrypted in the same way as eye-tracking data. This means that the various apps you download and the websites you visit do not have access to your personal information. The data captured by cameras and sensors is also kept private. For complete transparency, you can also tell people around you that you are taking a video or photo.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era in computing,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an official release. “Just as the Mac gave us personal computing and the iPhone gave us mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro gives us spatial computing. Built on the innovations in Vision Pro, with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of breakthrough innovations, Vision Pro is unlike anything ever created and years ahead. It provides users with great experiences and developers with exciting new opportunities.”
“Creating our first spatial computer required invention across nearly every aspect of the system,” added Mike Rockwell, vice president of Apple’s Technology Development Group. “By tightly integrating hardware and software, we designed the most advanced personal electronic device ever, a standalone spatial computer in a compact wearable form factor.”
