meta will officially release its text-based Twitter competitor, Threads, on Thursday, but for those who want to get their hands on it ahead of its release, there’s a way to access the invites now.
The social media giant, which owns Instagram and Facebook, is set to debut a new app just days after Elon Musk said Twitter would temporarily limit the number of tweets users can view. Rate limits have led users to competing apps such as Bluesky, which is backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, and saw “record traffic” on Saturday.
But while Bluesky is still in invite-only beta, Meta doesn’t seem to have any restrictions on who can use Threads, other than having to have an Instagram account. The app is set to release in the US on Thursday, but reportedly EU-based users have to wait.
Here’s how to get started:
1. Open the Instagram app and search for “Threads”
Open the Instagram app and click the magnifying glass icon on the bottom left[探索]Open the page.
Type the word “thread” into the search bar and you should see a small ticket emoji on the far right.
2. Tap the “Admit One” ticket in the search bar
Click on the “Admit One” ticket and you’ll see an invitation to Threads. The invitation includes your username, the date and time the thread started, a QR code, a numeric code, and a “Get Thread” button at the bottom of the screen that takes you to the App Store.
Threads is listed on the App Store, but is not yet available for download.
3. Open your profile and tap the three lines
If you don’t see your ticket in the search bar, you can also access your invites by clicking the three lines in the top right corner of your profile.
A Thread option appears near the top of the drop-down menu. Click to view the invitation.
Currently, Threads usernames appear the same as Instagram usernames. It’s unclear if this can be changed, and users will learn more when the app officially launches on Thursday.
