They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but that was before emojis. And before AI for emojis.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing software that will let users create customized emojis on the go as part of a series of new generative AI features. These features go beyond the catalog of emojis that Apple provides by creating special emojis for each situation.
Siri is also getting a generative AI makeover. With the help of Apple’s own massive language model, its virtual assistant now Bloombeg said the voice will sound more natural and the Apple Watch will have a more advanced version of Siri to help you get things done on the go. Apple hopes the technology will enable Siri to improve existing tasks, such as answering questions, and perform new tasks, such as summarizing text messages.
Apple is also aiming to release new AI features for iOS 18 and macOS 15 that will include transcribing voice notes, retouching photos, and faster and better search results.
Apple is expected to discuss some of these features at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference next month. The company has been fairly quiet about its generative AI strategy, especially compared to other tech giants like Google and Microsoft, but that doesn’t mean it should be left out of the AI arms race. CEO Tim Cook promised in February that “AI will impact all of our products and services.”
It makes sense that Apple would be a bit late with its announcement.
“Apple is rarely first to market,” Carolina Milanesi, principal analyst at technology consulting firm Creative Strategies, previously told Business Insider. “They prefer to enter a market and disrupt it, from wearables to smartphones to tablets, anything. They’ve never been first to market.”
