The Internet Archive and its Wayback Machine have been inaccessible for the past few days because their websites came under attack. In fact, the nonprofit organization Announced The company said in a blog post that it is currently on its “third day of thwarting intermittent DDoS cyber attacks.” Posts Twitter/X announced that most of its services were unavailable because bad actors were bombarding its website with “tens of thousands of fake requests for information per second.” On Tuesday morning, Warned “Service disruptions continue” as the attackers have not stopped.
However, the website’s data appears to be unaffected, and you can always examine the previous page content if you have access to it. “Thankfully our collection is safe, but we apologize for the denial of service attack that took us intermittently offline over the last three days,” Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle said in a statement. “With the help of others and the hard work of our staff, we have strengthened our defenses and are providing more reliable access to our library. What is new is that this attack is persistent, impactful, targeted and adaptive, and, importantly, vicious.”
The Internet Archive has not yet identified the source of the attacks, but says libraries and similar institutions have been targeted more frequently in recent times. One of the institutions mentioned is the British Library, whose online information systems were held hostage and ransom by a group of hackers last year. It also says it is being sued by the US publishing and recording industries for copyright infringement.
