The United States is deploying additional warships capable of shooting down ballistic missiles to the Middle East and its nearby waters as the region braces for a possible attack on Israel by Iran and its proxies, a Pentagon spokesman said on Friday.
Deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said the Pentagon US military force posture “To mitigate the potential for escalation of regional conflict by Iran or its partners and proxies.”
Earlier this week, Israel killed a top Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and, hours later, became the prime suspect in the assassination of a Hamas political leader in Iran.
The shocking series of killings has raised fears of retaliation by Iran and its proxies and could further entangle the region in conflict, with both Tehran and Hamas vowing revenge.
“Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered adjustments to the U.S. force posture to strengthen U.S. military defense capabilities, increase support for the defense of Israel, and ensure the United States is better prepared to respond to a range of contingencies,” Singh said.
Secretary Austin ordered the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which had been in the Pacific until just a few days ago, to be replaced by the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is deployed in the Middle East.
He also ordered additional destroyers and cruisers capable of intercepting ballistic missiles to move to waters in and near the Middle East in the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility.
Singh also said the Pentagon was “taking steps to strengthen its posture in preparation for the deployment of additional ground-based ballistic missile defense systems.” Austin also ordered the deployment of additional fighter jets to the region to provide additional air support.
The United States already has a wide range of existing capabilities in the region, including the USS Wasp amphibious ready group in the eastern Mediterranean, and it also has warships operating off the coast of Yemen.
During Iran’s major attack on Israel in April, a U.S. warship shot down an Iranian ballistic missile. U.S. fighter jets also destroyed dozens of drones. Iran and its proxies could launch a similar strike package of hundreds of projectiles in retaliation for recent confirmed or suspected Israeli actions.
“As we have demonstrated since October and again in April, America’s global defense is dynamic,” Singh said, adding that the Department of Defense maintains the capability to deploy on short notice to respond to evolving national security threats.
