The Perseids are a meteor shower that promises a spectacular show every summer (weather permitting), and this year’s event will reach its peak tonight. The best time to see the Perseids is from late Sunday night through the early hours of Monday morning. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)You’ll want to find an observing spot with clear, dark skies, but you don’t need any special equipment to get the most out of the experience; meteors will be plentiful and visible to the naked eye.
The Perseid meteor shower occurs every year in late July and lasts for several weeks. These meteors (or shooting stars) are caused by pieces of the Swift-Tuttle Comet interacting with Earth’s atmosphere, creating colorful streaks of light as the pieces burn up. The phenomenon can produce as many as 100 meteors per hour at its peak. The Perseids are also known for putting on an even more spectacular light show. “The Perseids are also known for fireballs,” says Dr. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)“Fireballs are larger bursts of light and color that last longer than your average meteor trail. This is due to the fact that fireballs originate from larger particles of cometary material.”
So, find a good spot (preferably after the moon has set), look up at the sky and wait – you might see some natural fireworks.
