The first time I used SocialAI, I was convinced the app was performance art, which was the only logical explanation for why I willingly signed up to have AI bots named Blaze Fury and Trollington Nefarious troll me.
Even the app’s developer, Michael Seyman, acknowledges that SocialAI’s premise may confuse people. His announcement of the app this week read like a generative AI joke: “A private social network where you get millions of AI-generated comments that offer feedback, advice, and insights.”
But SocialAI is real — provided that “reality” applies to an online world where everyone you interact with is a bot.
There’s only one real human in the SocialAI equation: you. The new iOS app is designed to let you post text just like you would on Twitter or Threads. As soon as you post, an ellipsis appears, indicating that others are loaded with ammunition and ready to strike back. Then, instantly, several comments cascade below your post. All comments are written by AI characters. New new In a version of the app just released today, these AIs also communicate with each other.
When you first sign up, choose These AI character archetypes: Want to hear from your fans? Troll? Skeptic? Eccentric? Pessimist? Visionary? Geek? Drama queen? Liberal? Conservative? Welcome to SocialAI, where Trollita Kafka, Vera D. Nothing, Sunshine Sparkle, Progressive Parker, Derek Dissent and Professor Debaterson will root for you or tell you why you’re wrong.
Is SocialAI a terrible thing, an echo chamber pushed to its logical extreme? That is, only if you ignore the truth of modern social media: our feeds are already filled with bots, tailored by algorithms, and monetized by AI-driven ad systems. We, flesh-and-blood humans, do what we feed: we freely feed social apps with fresh content, invite trolls, and buy merch. In return, we do it to be amused and feel connected to friends and fans.
