From Apple to Social Enterprise: A Bold Transition

If my dad, the eminent ophthalmologist, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Karim, had still been alive in 1989, his guidance would have guaranteed I followed in his footsteps, reaching the pinnacle of my profession as he did. However, childhood traumas create life-altering situations, where one door closes and another opens. That shift led me down a different path, ultimately working for the world’s greatest tech company, Apple.

Ironically, it was my dad’s vision (pun intended) that placed us among the first Mac-based families globally—a testament to what I humorously refer to as ‘iMaculate Conception.’ His influence shaped my affinity for technology and innovation.

Yet, it was the same childhood trauma, and the absence of a support system after his passing, that drove me to create something meaningful: Muslim Marriage Services (MMS). I wanted to build a platform where trust, digital security, and social impact come together—values shaped by my personal experiences and my time at Apple. The pain of loss and the challenge of forging my own path made me realize the importance of creating a safe space for others searching for companionship and community, grounded in integrity and empathy.

This deeply personal journey led Hajji to spend over a decade at Apple, where he held various roles between 2005 and 2016. Despite his corporate success, he felt a deep calling to serve his community in a more meaningful way. Recognizing the need for a secure and ethical platform for Muslim marriages, Hajji took a bold step and left Apple to pursue his entrepreneurial vision.

Building Muslim Marriage Services from the ground up required immense effort, especially when it came to convincing potential investors and partners of the value of a community-driven platform. “I had structure and resources at Apple,” Hajji reflects, “but with MMS, I had to build everything from scratch.” His persistence paid off, and in 2023, MMS launched to provide a trusted space for Muslims worldwide.

Innovation Rooted in Trust and Security

Muslim Marriage Services is not your average matrimonial site. It incorporates cutting-edge technology to ensure the highest level of security and user trust. Features like Yoti Airport-level ID verification and the DynamIQ Guardian™ Dashboard are key to its success, allowing families to discreetly monitor interactions while empowering individuals to make informed decisions.

Hajji’s focus on digital security has been pivotal, especially in an era where online privacy is often compromised. The platform ensures that all profiles are genuine, and the ProfileShield™ feature fosters an environment of transparency and honesty by allowing guardians to approve or decline ward member requests to share their profile with Premium or Trusted members. Like many entrepreneurs, Hajji faced significant challenges along the way. One of the biggest hurdles was raising the initial capital to fund his vision. “It took five years to convince my mother to provide the initial capital,” Hajji shares, “and I raised an additional £50,000 to fund the platform.” The setbacks didn’t stop there—securing investment within the Muslim community was a challenge, but Hajji remained undeterred.

By collaborating with a world-class development team in Kolkata, Hajji was able to overcome the technical challenges of building such an advanced platform. Today, Muslim Marriage Services is gaining recognition, having been nominated for the Islam Channel Awards 2024 and featured in a Yoti case study.

Hajji’s mission is clear: to revolutionize the Muslim matrimonial space by prioritizing safety, integrity, and community impact. As a certified social enterprise, MMS reinvests 50% of its profits back into the community, reinforcing Hajji’s commitment to creating a positive social impact.

Q: What inspired you to transition from a corporate career at Apple to founding Muslim Marriage Services?

A: Working at Apple gave me the opportunity to develop key skills in technology and operations, but I felt a calling to serve the Muslim community in a more impactful way. I noticed the lack of trustworthy matrimonial platforms for Muslims, and I knew I could leverage my skills to create something secure and meaningful. That’s where the idea for Muslim Marriage Services came from.


Q: How does Muslim Marriage Services differ from other matrimonial platforms?

A: Muslim Marriage Services is built on trust and security. We prioritize user safety with Yoti Airport-level ID verification, ensuring that profiles are genuine. Our DynamIQ Guardian™ Dashboard also allows family members to monitor activity, which is important in Muslim communities. Additionally, MMS is a certified social enterprise, meaning 50% of our profits are reinvested into the community.


Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while building Muslim Marriage Services?

A: One of the biggest challenges was securing the initial funding. It took five years to convince my mother to provide the initial capital, and raising the additional £50,000 was difficult. Convincing investors in the Muslim community to back the project was another hurdle, but I stayed persistent. Building trust within the community took time, but it was essential to our mission.


Q: How do you ensure the security and privacy of your users?

A: We use Yoti’s ID verification technology, which offers the highest level of security—similar to what’s used in airports. This ensures that all users are who they claim to be. Additionally, our ProfileShield™ feature allows users to control who views their personal information, creating a safe space for people to connect without compromising their privacy.


Q: What’s your vision for the future of Muslim Marriage Services?

A: My goal is to scale the platform globally, making Muslim Marriage Services the go-to platform for Muslims seeking marriage in a safe and ethical way. We will continue enhancing our technology, offering more features to protect our users and help them build meaningful connections. I also want to increase the social impact of MMS, with more reinvestment into community-driven initiatives.
