The New York City Department of Education has become the latest organization to disclose that personal data has been stolen as part of a massive MOVEit file transfer software hack. The agency said in an email sent to parents on Sunday that the personal information of about 45,000 students, including social security numbers and dates of birth in some cases, had recently been compromised. The education ministry said personal information of staff was also accessed, but did not specify how many teachers or staff were affected.
“For the New York City Department of Education, safety and security, including student and staff personal information and data, is of paramount importance. It’s about pinpointing the specific impact,” the ministry said on Sunday. “Once that decision is made, we will begin preparing to notify individuals whose confidential information has been compromised. Along with the notification, individuals will be provided access to identity monitoring services.”
The Ministry of Education is one of many organizations affected by the MOVEit hack. Clop is a suspected ransomware gang pro-Russian relations, which claimed responsibility for the cyber attack in early June.
