AT&T’s massive outage was affecting more than 70,000 customers as of 8 a.m. ET, according to the company. Most of these issues were concentrated in Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. This affected cell phone service and data connectivity, with many customers noting they could not even contact 911.
The cause of the service interruption is still unknown. AT&T is “We are working urgently to restore service,” it wrote. The company advises customers to use Wi-Fi calling until the issue is resolved.
Thousands of Verizon and T-Mobile customers have also reported outages, and both companies said affected customers are trying to contact AT&T phone numbers. The market is declaring this a serious problem, as AT&T stock has fallen nearly 3% since opening this morning.
Cell phone interruptions are a part of everyday life, but the fact that many affected customers are unable to contact 911 or other emergency services is especially concerning. The San Francisco Fire Department urged residents to call 911 from a landline or “contact a friend or family member” with another carrier.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens Although it was possible to make and receive 911 calls, many AT&T customers were unable to do so. Dickens suggested city residents contact AT&T with questions about service, rather than the Atlanta Emergency Services System. Massachusetts State Police echoed this sentiment, noting that 911 centers have been flooded with calls about cell phone service. “Please don’t do that.”
This is an ongoing issue and we will update this article when service is restored or when AT&T issues updated information regarding the cause.
