The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) limits the power of large platform holders, but it may also have created new sources of income (and some drama) for those same large platform holders. Companies that lure users outside of the Play Store will have to pay Google a portion of in-app purchases and subscriptions. Everyone will treat this as rationally as they did when Apple announced it.
At the same time, they’re worried that gaming giants won’t play by the rules. The iPhone maker pointed to a tweet from (Epic CEO) Tim Sweeney that suggested a lack of trust in the company’s rules. Apple has more or less said out loud that they can’t trust Epic. Epic is hard to trust, especially given its track record of agreeing to work within Apple’s rules and then openly breaking them.
