Google Meet (formerly Google Hangouts Meet) is a video calling app that allows people to come together for virtual meetings. From 2 to 100 people can join the same meeting and talk, communicate via chat, and share video from anywhere with internet access.
Google designed the platform primarily for businesses and other organizations, and it’s a great way for coworkers who don’t work in the same place to communicate, and of course, it can also be used as a video platform to connect friends and family.
Google Meet hosts can share what’s on their screen with everyone on the call, and participants can turn off their own audio or video feeds at any time and join in however they like. Google’s Gemini AI has also powered the service, adding things like visual effects that fix poor quality video and lighting issues, and translated subtitles for participants with language barriers.
Like other video conferencing platforms, Google Meet has exploded in popularity during the pandemic, with Google CEO Sundar Pichai announcing in April 2020 that Google Meet was adding roughly 3 million users every day.
Here’s what you need to know about how to use the platform:
How much does Google Meet cost?
Google Meet has a free plan that allows anyone with a Google account to create and join calls, but it has some limitations: Group meetings can’t last longer than 60 minutes and can’t have more than 100 participants (one-on-one meetings and mobile calls have no time limits).
But Google offers pricing plans for organizations and individuals who want more flexibility for their meetings.
Google Workspace has a few different membership tiers, and the more you pay, the more people you can have on one Google Meet call.
- Business Starter It costs $6 per user per month and allows meetings up to 100 people at a time for up to 24 hours.
- Business Standard It costs $12 per user per month, and you can meet with up to 150 people at once.
- Business Plus It costs $18 per user per month, which allows you to meet with up to 500 people at once.
- Enterprise There is no fixed price and you will need to contact a sales rep. At this level, you can meet with up to 1,000 people at a time.
Each Google Workspace tier also comes with additional Google Drive storage space and advanced data security options. There’s also a version built for schools and educators, which Google offers for free to certain institutions. Google Meet is also integrated into Google Classroom, Google’s online education platform.
For individuals who want to use Google Meet for business, Google Workspace offers a personal plan for $9.99 per month, or an annual package for $8.33 per month for 12 months, which offers up to 24 hours of meetings and extra storage.
