Former President Donald Trump’s selection of a running mate is nearing the final stages.
According to multiple reports, the Trump campaign has asked North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance to provide background documents. Presidential campaigns often ask finalists for the vice presidential nomination to participate in a thorough vetting process.
According to NBC News, which first reported the vetting, Trump’s field has been narrowed down to four candidates: those three and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.
Trump had previously stoked speculation about his pick by publicly acknowledging that his list included six names: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Scott, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Florida Rep. Byron Donald and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
The Trump campaign also sent requests for information to Scott, Donald, Stefanik and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, but ABC News reported that it was unclear whether those requests were as extensive as the ones received by Burgum, Rubio and Vance.
What’s clear is that Trump needs to make a decision soon: The Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee on July 15.
History suggests the final choice may be a surprise, so it’s worth considering a wider range of potential names.
