It’s unclear whether ChatGPT’s developer, OpenAI, is actually making any profit from it, but on Wednesday report in informationWhat we do know is that the company has doubled its annual revenue (a figure that, according to the publication’s easy-to-understand explanation, is 12 times the previous month’s revenue) over the past six months.
OpenAI’s annual revenue is $3.4 billion, CEO Sam Altman reportedly told staff, up from $1.6 billion late last year and $1 billion a year ago. Most of that revenue comes from a subscription version of ChatGPT, which offers higher message limits for users who pay at least $20 a month, and from developers who pay the company to use the company’s large language models in their own apps and services. About $200 million on an annual basis comes from Microsoft, which pays OpenAI a cut of sales of OpenAI’s large language models to customers who use Azure, its enterprise cloud computing platform.
Notably, an OpenAI spokesperson said: information OpenAI claimed the financial statements were “inaccurate” but did not explain which details it disputed. OpenAI did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment.
Earlier this week, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to connect ChatGPT directly to the operating systems of its iPhones, iPads, and Macs, and enable Siri to access ChatGPT to answer questions, although the financial terms of the deal are still unclear.
