Maryland Gov. Wes Moore launched his campaign for North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein last week, urging military veterans to support his fellow Democratic candidate in one of the nation’s most competitive gubernatorial races.
For candidates running for governor, getting an endorsement from the incumbent governor is extremely important, especially if the race is close.
Moore’s visit to the Tar Heel State came at a time when Stein, now attorney general, was launching her “Veterans for Stein” campaign. Union.
North Carolina is home to one of the largest numbers of active-duty military personnel in the nation. Approximately 800,000 veteransSo it is natural for politicians to have ties with the military, who wield great influence within a nation.
For Moore, who served with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and deployed to Afghanistan from 2005 to 2006, patriotism and service shouldn’t be limited to any particular political party or ideology.
Moore has been spreading that message through campaigning for candidates across the country, starting with his bid for governor in 2022, and in the process, working to keep the conversation going where it needs to be if the Democratic Party is to remain a viable party in every region of the country.
Moore feels the initiative will resonate.
“There are things worth fighting for, and we have risked our own safety for freedoms,” Moore recently told Business Insider. “Some freedoms are now on the ballot, including the freedom to know that reproductive health is a matter between a woman and her doctor.”
Last November, Moore traveled to Virginia to campaign for Democratic legislative candidates, visiting the military-heavy Hampton Roads region and endorsing veterans like Rep. Michael Fegans of Virginia Beach, who was elected to the House of Representatives that month.
“[W]”We are resisting a number of individual forces that are trying to assert rights in the name of patriotism while restricting rights in the name of patriotism,” Moore told BI at the time.
With the country becoming more politically polarized by the day, states like North Carolina, where the vote is still significantly split, present great opportunities for Democrats.
Former President Donald Trump won North Carolina in 2016 and 2020, but Stein won the attorney general election in the same general election.
Moore believes Stein has a strong chance of winning this fall’s election, saying she shares the values veterans want, especially on issues like health care and housing affordability.
“He’s consistently stood up for veterans as attorney general,” the governor told BI last week, “and he will continue to do so as governor.”
