Spotify has New Plans For U.S. subscribers, the old price of $11 per month will remain, provided you don’t mind ditching audiobooks. The new basic tier includes the music and podcast content available in Premium, but doesn’t include the 15 hours of audiobook access, a recently added feature that many subscribers likely won’t care about anyway. Spotify announced earlier this month that it would be increasing the price of Premium to $12 per month starting in July.
The master plan reflects this. roll out It launched in the UK last month, and this plan costs £11 per month, while the premium plan with audiobook content costs £12 per month.
Some suspect Spotify’s audiobook push has nefarious intentions. Earlier this month, the National Music Publishers Association called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the move, going so far as to denounce the company’s audiobook integration as a “scheme to mislead consumers and cheat the music royalty system to increase profits.” The NAPA lawsuit claims that the audiobook integration will cost Spotify about $150 million in lost music royalty revenue over the next year. Spotify denied the accusations, telling Engadget that it has done nothing wrong.
Spotify is also trying to save money in other areas. Last year, it was reported that the company was planning to overhaul its royalty model. Part of the plan is said to be to eliminate monetization of songs that earn less than 5 cents a month and to exclude independent artists without loyal fanbases.
Spotify also laid off around 9,000 employees at the end of last year, citing a “gap between financial targets and current operating costs.”
