Located in rural Maryland, within Catoctin Mountain Park, sits the presidential retreat known as Camp David.
The first portion of the complex was built by the Works Progress Administration in 1935, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt made it his presidential retreat. He originally named it “Shangri-La,” a name that stuck until the Eisenhower administration, when it was renamed Camp David after his grandson.
The facility has expanded over the years, adding new cabins and a swimming pool, and has also been the site of several diplomatic events, including the Camp David Accords in 1978 and the G8 summit in 2012.
