In this Side Hustle Spotlight Q&A, we feature co-founders Rachel Reinaara Soares and Heather Aiu. ALOHA Collectionsells “multi-purpose bags and pouches designed for everyday use.” Answers have been edited for length and clarity.
What was your day job (or other source of income) when you started your side hustle?
When we were roommates starting our side hustles, Heather was looking for an opportunity to start her own business in real estate and Rachel was an international flight attendant with a suitcase full of ideas.
When did you start your side hustle and what inspired you to start one?
The original idea was born from a real problem in 2014: Rachel’s wet bikini and Heather’s sweaty yoga gear. We envisioned creating a multi-functional travel bag that would protect your belongings from spills, leaks, splashes, and more. Today, our water-resistant bags are the perfect solution for the adventures of everyday life.

What was the first step you took to start your side hustle?
We launched the ALOHA Collection with one prototype bag and $2,000. When we launched our Kickstarter campaign, it was not only to fund our first production run, but also to prove that there was real interest in our product. We used that money to attend our first trade shows, where people loved the bags. We quickly secured pre-orders, which was crucial in securing a manufacturer and launching our product line.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in starting your side hustle and how did you overcome it?
In the beginning, it was really difficult to source materials and find reliable manufacturers. Our motto became “When someone says no, think of a way to find a yes.” No matter what setbacks we faced, our goal was to keep moving forward.
How long did it take you to start earning a steady income each month? How much did you make from your side hustle?
For the first two years, I reinvested all my money back into the business. I was able to triple my revenue from year one to year two. I was seeing steady growth so I quit my day job in mid-2016.

What is ALOHA’s current growth and revenue?
The company enjoys a large market share in Hawaii and has begun to expand into the mainland United States. The company’s retail locations are expanding rapidly, with 20 locations planned within the next three years in addition to five existing locations (Waikiki, Encinitas, Lido, Whalers Village, Malibu), Disney Springs, and the soon-to-open Ala Moana. This success is driven by a commitment to company culture, attracting and retaining top talent, and a unique approach to goal setting. Since 2014, ALOHA Collection has expanded into over 2,000 retail locations in the United States and 25 countries, achieving impressive revenue milestones of $62,913 in 2014, $204,067 in 2015, and $583,874 in 2016.
What do you enjoy most about running this business?
The most rewarding part of running ALOHA Collection is the multifaceted impact we create – knowing we’re truly making a difference by providing opportunities for growth and development for our team and empowering our guests to live an active, adventurous lifestyle. That sense of purpose and connection to something bigger than yourself, and the freedom to live and work on your own terms, is the best feeling in the world. From day one, our goal has been to share ALOHA with the world and build an international “ohana” – a global family – united by a love of travel and adventure.
