Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has endorsed former President Donald Trump ahead of the November election, joining a chorus of conservatives in condemning President Joe Biden.
“Our adversaries don’t limit their planning to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We need a commander in chief who can lead 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Trump said, speaking on the second day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
DeSantis’ comments appeared to be a reference to Biden saying he needed more rest and should stop holding events after 8 p.m. after his disastrous defeat in the CNN debate with Trump.
“America cannot afford four more years of a Bernie’s Weekend presidency,” DeSantis said, eliciting loud cheers from the audience and prompting a smile from Trump.
“Weekend at Bernie’s” is a 1989 dark comedy about two insurance company employees who try to cover up the death of their boss, Bernie, while spending the weekend at a beach house in the Hamptons.
DeSantis’ joke was clearly a jab at Biden’s health and stamina, but a series of gaffes in recent weeks have raised concerns among Democratic lawmakers and donors that Biden may not be the party’s best option for the 2024 presidential election.
But Biden at least 18 House Democrats and 1 Democratic Senator Biden also said: Said He will only quit if he gets “hit by a train.”
While DeSantis is currently a vocal supporter of Trump, the two have a complicated history.
He started out as a Trump protégé. He won the Florida gubernatorial election in 2018. With President Trump’s supportTrump He praised himself. DeSantis wins.
But relations between the two have deteriorated since DeSantis announced his intention to run for president in 2024 and challenged Trump.
“I don’t think that’s a good thing,” Trump told reporters in November 2022.
“I’m a very loyal person, so I don’t understand disloyalty. I really don’t understand it. But you see it in politics,” he said.
Trump has also given DeSantis several nicknames, including “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
DeSantis dropped out of the race in January after losing key support in early voting states.
The two men may have since reconciled. The Washington Post The two reportedly met in April at the Shell Bay Club in Miami, Florida, where Trump asked DeSantis for help raising funds for his presidential campaign. DeSantis said he was willing to help, according to The Washington Post.
Representatives for DeSantis, Trump and Biden did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent by Business Insider outside of regular business hours.
