David Cross is a self-described “professional speaker,” but let’s take a closer look at his background. Cross is one of the funniest humans on this planet we call Earth, with a resume chock full of iconic comedy work. Mr. Shaw, Developmental arrest And his latest special, The world’s worst dadHere are some examples:
He’s a really interesting guy, and a really busy guy, and now he’s also a podcast host. David Cross and the Senses Work Overtime And planning a show, David Cross and his super friendsThe show will premiere in Central Park at SummerStage in New York City on August 8th, starring Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Silverman and Fred Armisen. Also on August 8th, the fourth and final season of the show will premiere. The Umbrella AcademyAnd after that? He’ll be hitting the road with a new comedy tour. David Cross: The End of the Beginning of the End.
Yes, he’s very busy, but fortunately, he’s not so busy that he doesn’t have time to sit down and talk for the next episode. How does success happen? PodcastsBecause I was the other person present during the chat, I can safely say that Kloss was incredibly funny and insightful as he detailed his journey from comedy club newcomer to being one of the top comedians working today.
Below are excerpts from our conversation, edited for length and clarity: Enjoy!
Creating new material for the special program
“Like most comedians, once you make a special and your material is out there, unfortunately, that’s it,” Cross says. “That’s the only place stand-up comedy exists in the art form. endI burn it. I have to start all over again every time. When I start, I don’t have a particular theme. I write a lot of riffs, expand them little by little, and write songs on stage. So what I’m doing at the end of the tour is different from what I was doing at the beginning. When I make a special, I have to cut what I’ve always developed because I don’t want to be on stage for two hours. I have about 20 minutes of stuff I haven’t done yet, so I can bring that into the new show. So I’m not starting completely from scratch. “
About insulting parts of the country where he performs
“When was the last time you were in Phoenix?” Cross asked. “I went there recently and saw a really fun show, but the people there don’t seem to get the impression that it’s a bad place to live.” I know this is the worst place. I have to come here for school. I have to come here for work. Look, a third of our country lives in areas where city ordinances require you to spray coolant mist, and if you don’t, half the people there will die. Believe me, if you live in these areas, you know that’s terrible.”

Form the Superpals
“Super Pals “It’s going to be a great show,” Cross says. “We have a great lineup, but I’m telling you, one or two of them will cancel. It happens all the time. It happens all the time. I shouldn’t say this, but something always happens. It happened when we did two nights at Irving Plaza in New York. I said, ‘I’m home and all my friends are here and I have a special guest coming,’ and they called me and said, for good reason, ‘Oh, we can’t do the show,’ so you just have to accept it. It’s a shame it wasn’t a charity show, so I could have made them feel guilty.”
On being a secret star at home
“My daughter Marlowe Chipmunk “I said, ‘Hey, it’s your dad.’ And from then on, that was the only thing she was interested in. I was so happy,” Cross said. “To be honest, she’d heard my voice in movies and shows, but she’d never really felt a connection. Maybe. Megamind I’ve watched it five times Kung Fu Panda A lot. I Bubble Guppies “She was watching some other kid-ish stuff. She liked it, but she never saw the connection. Maybe when she’s a little older, she’ll understand. I’m not going to sit her down and turn on these shows and say, ‘Hey, it’s time to show you what Daddy’s up to.'”
About Resurrection Developmental arrest
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Kloss says. “I don’t think so. And Jessica [Walter]”I don’t know how we’re going to do it without Lucille, because she’s no longer with us. And ideally, we would have liked to end it with season four. I loved that show, I still love it, and I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity, and I love those people, but I don’t think we should do it anymore.”

On staying motivated
“It’s tough sometimes,” Cross says. “I’m tired. I was out until 2 a.m. last night, then I got up and went to Spokane airport to catch a connecting flight to Oklahoma City. I got there late at night, and I was eating Fritos. But it’s professionalism. I have to figure out how to prepare myself, like doing a bunch of push-ups. I pride myself on giving 100% every time I’m onstage. Even if the audience is terrible (which it rarely is now), I always picture some 16-year-old kid in the balcony coming to see my first comedy show. That kid wants to do stand-up comedy, and I want to do the show for that kid, because I was that kid once.”
Accepting criticism
“The criticism I listen to all the time comes from a few people, including my wife Amber, Bob Odenkirk, and Jon Benjamin,” Kloss says. “When they praise me, I know it’s not bullshit, and I know it’s coming from an intelligent place. But there are people who really love my work, and there are people who just hate my work. I try not to listen to those extremes. If the criticism is, ‘You’re annoying,’ or ‘You shouldn’t talk about that,’ then it’s not really criticism. But if someone is critical of something and I understand their point or their position, then I take that criticism and acknowledge it. Whether I do something about it is another matter. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.”
The End Times
“Aliens aren’t going to cause the apocalypse,” Cross says. “We’re very, very, very, very slowly but surely experiencing the apocalypse right now. The apocalypse doesn’t necessarily mean a massive fireball will rain down on the Earth and wipe out humanity in seven seconds. No. We’re experiencing the apocalypse right now in real time. What’s my plan? Go on tour, sell merch, and invest in fresh water.”
