HMD today announced its latest smartphone under its brand, the Skyline. The phone is powered by a mid-range Snapdragon 7s Gen2 CPU and comes with up to 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. It has 15W Qi2 wireless charging and a 4600mAh battery that lasts “up to 48 hours.” The screen is a 6.55-inch full HD+ panel with a 144Hz refresh rate and brightness of up to 1,000 nits. The phone will be available in pink (maybe a leftover from the Barbie collaboration) or black. The Skyline phone will be available from August for $499.
A standout feature of the Skyline is its repairability, which has been a focus of recent projects from HMD, which also makes Nokia-branded phones. The phone model’s back cover can be removed, allowing a broken screen, worn-out battery or bent charging port to be replaced by the user or a third-party shop. Replacement parts will be available in select markets from iFixit, which says the Skyline will be roughly on par with the Fairphone in terms of repairability. The right-to-repair movement has gained significant momentum in the last year, and even resistant device manufacturers have started to change their tune. It’s positive to see HMD not only offering the option for self-repair, but making it easy to do so.
The Skyline also has some noteworthy photography features. The 50MP front camera has autofocus and eye tracking, and it also has “selfie gesture” hardware that responds to one of four common hand gestures to take a photo. The rear camera is 108MP and features both Portrait and Night modes to help you capture the best image for each moment.
As more people seek options to break away from the always-connected lifestyle, Skyline offers a Detox mode, which allows users to select specific apps and contacts to block during scheduled breaks. This is useful for those who feel they are spending more time than necessary on social media or gaming, or who need a clearer work-life balance.
