Netflix is expanding its gaming lineup with an interesting (and perhaps cruel) new tie-up. The company announced this during its quarterly earnings call. The show has already spawned several spinoffs for streaming services. The company has also partnered with a British production company to produce a new series based on the fictional reality TV show. an actual reality TV show, but thankfully not as deadly as the original.
Another insight from the quarterly report is just how important advertising has become to Netflix. The ad-supported tier now accounts for 45% of new sign-ups in markets where the subscription option is available. The plan was only available in , but its viewership is already up 34% quarter-over-quarter in Q2 2024. Part of this change is due to the Basic plan option being phased out. It’s already been phased out in the UK, with the US and France next.
