Former President Donald Trump has presented a new approach to political rhetoric in recent days — a message of unity — but that approach fell apart within the first 30 minutes of his speech Thursday night.
After all, unity is a key message from President Joe Biden.
“I had a really great speech prepared, a very tough one, talking about this horrible, corrupt administration,” Trump told the Post, “and then I threw it away.”
But as he spoke at the Republican National Convention, cracks began to appear in his new stance.
Just 26 minutes into his speech, Trump suddenly shifted focus from praising his supporters and family to attacking his opponents.
“They got another subpoena from the Democrats,” Trump said, referring to his sons Donald Jr. and Eric. “Crazy Nancy Pelosi. Everything is boom, boom, boom.”
When Pelosi’s name was called, the crowd erupted in boos.
“They’re destroying our country and it has to stop,” Trump added.
Trump appeals to unity while insulting his opponents
Now officially the Republican nominee, Trump began his speech with a message of unity.
“In a time when power politics too often divide us, now is the time to remember that we are all one people,” the president told the crowd, “we are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
But as the 92-minute speech continued, the former president packed more of his comments about Brando into his usual mix of insults and allegations against his rivals.
“They used COVID-19 to cheat and we’re not going to let them do that again,” Trump said of the 2020 election, claiming without evidence that it was stolen.
“The damage that this administration has caused,” Trump said, “I often say, you can name the 10 worst presidents in the history of the United States. The 10 worst people combined would not come close to the damage that Biden has caused.”
In praising the Republican platform for 2024, President Trump again criticized his rivals.
“This is very short compared to the long, boring, pointless agendas of the past, including the Democratic agenda,” he said. “They write agendas that are hundreds of pages long and then they never read them after they’re done. And in their case, we’re lucky because they don’t read them because they’re pretty terrible.”
The former president repeated a line he said during a presidential debate in June, saying Democrats are “trying to destroy Social Security and Medicare because of the influx of millions of people.”
Immigrants are eligible for social security only if they pay taxes into the system or meet other criteria.
Trump’s mixed stance at the Republican National Convention
Despite the renewed name-calling and finger-pointing, Trump made some remarks that portrayed a more measured and peaceful MAGA agenda.
“We are Americans. Ambition is our tradition, greatness is our birthright. But so long as we spend our energies fighting one another, our destiny will remain out of reach,” he said at the conclusion of his seven-minute speech.
“We can do this together, we will come together, we will come together and success will bring us together,” he added.
The former president’s chaotic speech came after advisers suggested earlier this week that the president might take a softer tone but would not stop attacking key issues from his campaign.
“You can be gentle within limits, but you have to call out insanity when you see it. It’s not about tone.” Donald Trump Jr. told Axios’ Mike Allen:
“Unity is clearly an opportunity to bring the country together,” he said. Chris LaCivita, a senior campaign aide“This is very important, but we must remember that we are in the middle of an election campaign, and we have to win that campaign.”
