Microsoft users around the world are experiencing an error screen known as the “Blue Screen of Death” as widespread technology outages continue.
The US tech giant has been hit by a major outage after an update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected many other companies as well.
“There have been reported issues affecting Windows clients running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent and virtual machines running Windows Server that may result in a bugcheck (BSOD). [blue screen of death]”The impact is estimated to have started around 19:00 UTC on July 18,” Microsoft said in an update at 5:40 a.m. ET.
“We can confirm that the affected updates have been withdrawn by CrowdStrike. Customers who continue to experience issues should contact CrowdStrike for additional support,” the company added.
Microsoft previously said its cloud services had been restored following an outage that affected its Azure services and Microsoft 365 apps suite in the central U.S. A company spokesperson told Dow Jones that these were two separate and unrelated issues, one related to Azure and the other to CrowdStrike.
They added that they “expect a resolution to the CrowdStrike issue soon.”
Microsoft shares were down about 2% in premarket trading as of 5:53 a.m. ET.
