Mario and Donkey Kong have been rivals, best friends, go-kart rivals and tennis buddies. An Italian plumber once kidnapped Donkey Kong’s son. Donkey Kong once bought Mario’s toy company (?). And, guess what? They have history. But they’ve never appeared as playable characters in each other’s platform adventures. Thanks to a nifty hack, that’s changed.
Mario is Donkey Kong Countrythanks to a ROM programmer named RainbowSprinklez. As the name DKC X Mario suggests, this is not just a sprite swap. Don’t waste your time on that. Mario’s moves were not present in the original code and had to be fully incorporated into the game. Donkey Kong is a lumbering beast. He doesn’t spin, double jump or carry items. Check out the video and prepare to be impressed.
this is, Super Mario WorldThere are mushrooms that make him grow, fire flowers, and of course, everyone’s favorite dinosaur Yoshi, both in terms of sprites and controls. Donkey Kong CountryThe levels are the same, the enemies are the same, consisting mainly of King K. Rool and his Kremlin army, and if you’re familiar with the layout of the original DKC, this could be a way to breathe new life into the ancient platform game.
The music also appears to have been altered, replacing the original tracks with music from Mario, Zelda and Mega Man games. RainbowSprinklez wrote in a document that the hack was “made simply because I love Mario.” Available for download It’s all here I’ll give it a try, but this should probably be done sooner rather than later.
