The FDA warned the public about Diamond Shrooms products after eight people in four states became ill after consuming the retailer’s product. Microdose Chocolate Bars.
As of July 15, the FDA said that number had risen to 69 cases in 28 states.
“Sixty of the 69 cases reportedly sought medical attention, 36 were hospitalized, and one possible related death is under investigation,” the FDA said.
Microdosing is the practice of taking small amounts of drugs, such as hallucinogens like psilocybin, to improve creativity and mental health. Microdosing has become popular in Silicon Valley and is trending among CEOs.
Diamond Shrooms’ website says its products do not contain psilocybin or any other controlled substances.
However, testing conducted by the University of Virginia Health Toxicology Laboratory found that Diamond Shrooms’ Sour Peach Apple and Rainbow gummies contained psilocin.
Psilocin is a “hallucinogenic mushroom alkaloid.” Metabolomics Innovation CenterThe DEA considers psilocin a Schedule I controlled substance in several states, including Virginia, where the study was conducted.
According to a CDC investigation, five people who ate gummies labeled as containing fly agaric were tested at a hospital between September 2023 and June 2024.
Although Amanita muscaria can cause some undesirable symptoms, the report says it is legal.
“Individuals purchasing products advertised as hallucinogenic or nootropic mushroom gummies should be aware that packaging labels may not accurately represent the contents and that these products may contain substances that have unexpected and potentially toxic effects,” the report said.
Representatives for Diamond Shrooms and the University of Virginia Health Toxicology Institute did not respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment.
Diamond Shrooms recalled all of its products, including gummies and chocolate bars, in June after cases across the country continued to rise.
Officials said they will be monitoring Prophet Premium Blends, the company behind Diamond Shrooms, during the recall period.
“Consumers should not purchase or consume Diamond Shrooms brand products,” the agency added.
