Google Pixel smartphone Pixel 9 has long been known for its excellent camera system, but in recent years the company has been beefing up its imaging platform with artificial intelligence features that expand its capabilities. Taking a photo is not just about tapping the shutter button and taking a nice picture. Now there are ways to erase unwanted things, move subjects around in your photo, have AI enhance the background, and even remove annoying sounds like sirens from videos. This year’s Pixel 9 series goes even further with more generative AI features that can change, improve, and generally make your photos more flashy.
Google, Pixel 9 The 510i’s HDR+ pipeline is an image-processing algorithm that ensures your photos have just the right levels of contrast, exposure, color, and shadows. But new features like Add Me, Reimagine, Autoframe, and Zoom Enhance go beyond the capture stage to make it easy for anyone to perform tasks that previously required a bit of technical knowledge in a photo-editing app. Here are the details:
If you want to learn more about how these features were developed, read our exclusive interview with members of Google’s Pixel camera team.
Add me
You may have wanted to take a selfie with your partner or family in front of something like the Eiffel Tower. someone You have to take a photo, right? Instead of handing over your $1,000 phone to a stranger, Add Me performs the same task for you.
This is a special mode on Pixel 9 phones that first asks you to do a quick scan of your surroundings. Then you take a photo of your loved one in front of the subject, then swap places. Once the two of you take over taking the photo, you’ll see a blurred image of yourself in the camera preview, and the camera app will suggest where the second person should stand. Once you press the shutter button, the images are superimposed to make it look like you’re standing next to each other, even if you’re not actually standing next to each other.
It worked fine in my short test. Naturally, I tried to see if I could replicate myself. It worked once, but all my other attempts failed. Google says this is because the app isn’t designed to show the same person twice. Maybe it’ll work if I try changing my shirt or looking a lot different. I’ll need to test it more to see how well it works when I want to put my hand on someone else’s shoulder.
Rethink with Magic Editor
Reimagine is the latest feature of Google’s Magic Editor that lets you move subjects or erase objects in your photos. With this new tool, you select an area of your photo and a text prompt pops up, allowing you to type in what you want to appear as the end result. This could be anything from changing a photo from daytime to nighttime, to adding storm clouds, or, as I tried, adding a UFO over the Empire State Building.
