If you have an Amazon Echo Show 8 Photos edition, prepare yourself for ads to appear on your device. and And it was first reported Amazon is discontinuing its PhotosPlus subscription feature that allowed users to upload and display their own photos on the Echo Show 8.
PhotosPlus subscriptions end on September 12, and Amazon will end support for the photos feature on September 23. Instead, affected customers will have to upload photos to Amazon Photos, which comes with 25GB of storage, and put up with ads that appear on the home screen.
The $2-a-month feature lets users upload their own photos to display on their home screen, turning the voice- and touch-activated screen device into a digital photo frame that changes every 30 seconds to show the owner’s photo, and can be left on indefinitely (or as long as the rechargeable battery lasts).
References to the PhotosPlus subscription have been removed from Amazon’s website, and the Amazon Echo Show 8 Photos Edition is no longer for sale.
Amazon has been struggling mightily with its Alexa devices. Last month, Amazon reported that Alexa has cost Amazon more than $25 billion in lost revenue between 2017 and 2021. Amazon is looking to recoup some of those losses by 2021. The tech giant is also reportedly working on an advanced version of Alexa called “Alexa,” which may require a monthly subscription fee.
