Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested on Saturday at an airport near Paris as part of a preliminary investigation into the app’s lax approach to moderation and failure to curb criminal activity, according to reports. Citing French media BFM and TF1Telegram has also reportedly been accused of not cooperating with police. Durov was detained after arriving at Le Bourget airport on a private jet. Reuters Reported.
Telegram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, and is widely used especially in parts of Europe and Asia. The app, which reportedly has close to 1 billion monthly active users, uses end-to-end encryption and supports groups with tens of thousands of members, allowing for the sharing of large amounts of information and uncensored content. Concerns in the current investigation include the app’s failure to crack down on drug trafficking, child sexual abuse material and fraud.
