Monday was National Dog Day, and Lyft seized the opportunity to introduce the equivalent of a feature Uber has offered for about five years: Lyft’s new Pet Mode lets you specify that you’ll be bringing your pet along when you head out with your pet, ensuring you’re guaranteed a driver who can accommodate dogs or cats.
Like Uber Pet, Lyft’s pet mode comes with an additional fee — in this case, $4 plus tax — which the company says will be paid directly to the driver.
The new pet mode was released a year ago. The Tale of Tux the CatTux had been taken to the vet by his owner, Palash Pandey, when the Lyft driver in Austin, Texas, was accused of speeding away with Tux still in his carrier in the back seat of his car, ignoring Pandey’s pleas and banging on the window. The driver responded to Pandey’s in-app message, claiming he didn’t have a cat.

Tux was eventually found at the bottom of a flight of stairs about a mile from his drop-off point.
