Solar companies reportedly rent out 8.5 million square feet of roof space A building for the latest solar panel project.
The new rooftop solar panel grid installed by commercial and community solar developer Solar Landscape at NSA’s 1,052 self-storage facilities and properties across 42 states and Puerto Rico is expected to generate at least 100 megawatts of solar generating capacity. Headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado, NSA is one of the nation’s largest self-storage operators with brands including iStorage, Move It, Northwest and SecurCare.
These solar panels don’t just power NSA facilities: The panels also provide clean electricity at a discount to nearby businesses and homes.
One of the challenges of adopting solar energy is finding enough space to install solar panels, which can take up a lot of space, such as the world-record-setting solar farm in 2019, where 3.2 million solar panels covered an area of more than three square miles.
Solar Landscape and NSA may have found an interesting solution to the space problem for solar panel projects, and if this partnership is successful, it could encourage similar deals for other communities looking to benefit from solar technology.
