As the United States races toward the most crucial election in its 248-year history, Google is rolling out safeguards to help users access trusted information. Announced Late last year, the company said The company announced Friday that it was adding election-related guardrails to its YouTube, Search, Google Play and AI products.
YouTube plans to add an information panel above search results for at least some federal election candidates. The module will: What you see When you search for a public figure on the web, you’ll see basic information about them, like their political party, and a link to a Google search for more information. The company says the panel may also include links to the person’s official website (or other channels). As Election Day (November 5) approaches, YouTube’s homepage will also display reminders about where and how to vote.
Google Search includes aggregated voter registration resources from state elections offices for all users. Meanwhile, the Google Play Store will add a new badge to identify apps as official government apps, and the company outlined the requirements for apps that convey government information: Developer Help DocumentationApplications that submit the necessary forms and are approved will be eligible for “official recognition through clear visual display on the Play Store.”
As for generative AI, which is prone to hallucinations that would make even Jerry Garcia blush, Google is expanding the election-related restrictions it announced late last year to include disclosures for ads created or generated using AI, content labels for generated content, and SynthID digital watermarks embedded in AI-created text, audio, images, and videos. Initially described as for Gemini (app and web), the election guardrails apply to Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated Live Chat summaries, Gems (custom chatbots with user-created instructions), and Gemini image generation.
