Tenants campaign group Generation Rent says the upcoming Tenants’ Bill of Rights should encourage landlords to sell to each other, or to tenants.
The group was responding to Rightmove research which found that 18% of properties for sale had previously been on the rental market.
The concern is that this will reduce rental property inventory and cause rents to continue to rise.
Dan Wilson-Crowe, deputy chief executive of Generation Rent, said: “The government should either encourage current tenants to sell, which would be beneficial for both parties, or encourage tenants to stay and sell to other landlords.”
“If evictions must be carried out, tenants will need further notice and financial assistance with moving costs.”
Wilson Crow argued that building more housing, rather than focusing on allocations for landlords and homeowners, is the way to keep housing prices down.
He added: “Looking at the bigger picture, moving housing from rental to sale paves the way for renters to become homeowners, which is the government’s stated aim.”
“Despite fears that landlords will pull out of the market, this must happen if the Government wants to revive home ownership.”
“Keeping rents affordable means we need more homes, not more landlords, and the way out of this crisis is to give people homes where they want to live, where they can afford to live.”
