OpenAI, leader of Anthropic NVIDIA, Microsoft, Google According to CNBC, several US power and utility companies met at the White House on Thursday to discuss the future of artificial intelligence-driven energy infrastructure in the US.
According to a source familiar with the meeting, the call, which was attended by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropik CEO Dario Amodei and Google President Ruth Porat, focused on public-private discussions about the energy usage of artificial intelligence, data center capacity, semiconductor manufacturing and power grid capacity.
“We’re at the beginning of a new industrial revolution,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC as he left the conference. “This industry is going to create intelligence, and it takes energy to do that. … So we have to help everybody understand the needs, the opportunities, the challenges that are coming and do that in as efficient and scalable a way as possible.”
“The growth rate in this sector is so high that it will require cooperation between the public and private sectors,” Huang said, adding that Nvidia is in the process of starting full mass production of Blackwell chips.
An OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC that the company believes building additional infrastructure in the US is critical to the country’s industrial policy and economic future. “We appreciate the White House convening this meeting as it recognizes the priority of infrastructure to create jobs, ensure the benefits of AI are widespread, and ensure America remains at the forefront of AI innovation,” an OpenAI spokesperson said.
OpenAI has shared an economic impact analysis with Biden-Harris administration officials, including the estimated effect on jobs and gross domestic product of building a large data center in a sample of states across the US, including Wisconsin, California, Texas and Pennsylvania, sources familiar with the matter told CNBC.

Also in attendance Thursday were Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Among those attending the meeting were National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi, Domestic Policy Advisor to the Vice President Christine Lucius, and Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy John Podesta. Also in attendance, according to sources, were Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed.
The news follows an August announcement by OpenAI and Anthropic that they would have their new models tested by the US AI Safety Institute before releasing them to the public, following growing concerns within the industry about AI safety and ethics.
The lab, housed within the Department of Commerce at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, press release At the time, the company said it would have “access to key new models from each company both before and after their public release.”
The group was established after the Biden-Harris administration issued the U.S. government’s first executive order on artificial intelligence in October 2023, mandating new safety assessments, fairness and civil rights guidelines, and research on AI’s impact on the labor market.
