Opera is fully committed to artificial intelligence. This week, the company Integrate generative AI capabilities into web browsers, starting with “Shorten”, a feature that uses ChatGPT to create summaries of articles and web pages. Once the tool is published, you will see a new icon on the right side of the address bar. Tapping it opens a sidebar with a bulleted summary of the web page ChatGPT is viewing.
Jan Standel, Opera’s vice president of marketing and communications, said: , Shorten will start rolling out to users “soon.” The company is working on other AI-powered features that it claims will “enhance” the Opera experience, but didn’t provide details on what these additions entail.
Shorten’s announcement came the same week Microsoft announced it would add an “AI-powered co-pilot” to the browser. One of the things the company’s new Prometheus model can do is summarize web pages. Last week, Google shared that it is working on his AI chatbot powered by its LaMDA platform. The timing of the announcement suggests that Opera and Microsoft see generative AI as a way to break Google’s dominance in the browser market. However, it remains to be seen if people will actually switch away from Chrome as a result of these additions.
