according to varietystreaming platform HBO Max has alleged in a new lawsuit that Paramount Global violated a contract that gave it exclusive streaming rights to “South Park” through its streaming platform Paramount+.
The complaint states that “Defendant engaged in a simple and obvious ploy of misleading content to avoid liability.”
HBO Max is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
The lawsuit was filed in New York on Friday. According to the complaint, HBO Max won exclusive rights to stream new episodes of “South Park” and an old “library” of past episodes after a “very competitive” bidding process.
But in violation of that agreement, the lawsuit alleges that Paramount+ contracted the show’s creators with MTV for spin-off films and other spin-off media in an “illegal scheme.” The latter streamer also said he had paid for a certain number of episodes but had not received them.
“South Park” airs on Comedy Central (owned by Paramount) and, like Bloomberg, is one of the longest-running TV shows of all time. I got itIt follows the adventures of a group of four boys who joke around and run around in the small Colorado town of the same name.
HBO claims to have paid “more than $500 million” for the exclusive rights to stream it.
“Exclusivity was so important to Warner/HBO that when SPDS asked Warner/HBO if they would consider sharing the rights to South Park with CBS All Access or another Paramount streamer, Warner/HBO rejected the proposal as a “non-starter,” the lawsuit said.
SPDS is South Park Digital Studios, the media company behind ‘South Park’ and other titles such as ‘The Book of Mormon’.
“We believe these claims are without merit and look forward to proving it through the legal process,” Paramount told Variety.
