BARCELONA — Motorola is showing off a concept smartphone that rolls out when you slide it.
Featured at the Mobile World Congress tech conference in Barcelona, the phone features a flexible 5-inch display that stretches to 6.5 inches when pushed up.
The idea is to improve productivity and multitasking while easily fitting in your pocket.
Admittedly, phones aren’t something you can buy anytime soon. The phone is in the early concept stages and we don’t know how much it will cost.
Motorola is no longer the major player in the mobile industry it once was. According to Statista data, the company expects he will ship 51 million units in 2021.
The design at least shows innovation in a market struggling to come up with new features that excite consumers.
Companies want to change that with new form factors like foldable displays.
CCS Insight Chief Analyst Ben Wood told CNBC:
The device comes at a painful time for smartphone makers.
Industry sales fell 11.3% last year as consumers tightened their belts. This has exacerbated the ongoing trend for people to hold onto their phones longer as upgrades from major players are phased in.
lenovoThe company that owns Motorola also announced a rotatable laptop at this week’s conference. Like smartphones, laptops rise slowly and vertically, allowing you to view more web pages or open multiple apps on a single screen.
