The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration () has launched an investigation into the following reports of steering wheels falling off the road. The agency said he was aware of two reports of a steering wheel on a Model Y vehicle completely off the column. It added that the vehicle was handed over to the owner without the fixing bolts that secure the steering wheel.
In both cases, friction alone held the wheel in place until the force applied to the wheel “overcame the resistance of the friction fit while the vehicle was in motion,” NHTSA’s Defects Investigation Office said. are (). Each vehicle had low mileage.
One owner is said to have received his Model Y just five days before the incident. There was no car behind the driver when the wheel came off, and the driver said he was able to pull safely into a divider on Twitter and NHTSA complaints.Occurred on Route 1 in Woodbridge, New Jersey in late January No one was injured in the incident, the owner said.
“Both vehicles underwent final repairs that required the removal and reinstallation of the steering wheels,” NHTSA said. The agency’s investigation of an estimated 120,000 model-year 2023 vehicles will “assess the extent, frequency, and manufacturing processes associated with this condition.”
Tesla, which no longer has a communications department where it can seek comment, has faced several NHTSA investigations over the past few years. The agency last month had Tesla recalling about 363,000 vehicles over issues with its fully self-driving software. NHTSA said the system could “exceed speed limits and cross intersections in an illegal or unpredictable manner.” Tesla said it would issue an over-the-air update to fix the problem.
As Note that Tesla has had to issue 20 recalls since January 2022. Some of the recalls were mandated by NHTSA. For example, in November, the automaker talked about rear light problems, which were remedied by a software update. It was his second recall in recent days for Tesla.
