But Sandy Yorn is an entrepreneur and pioneer who has overcome addiction and other challenges to rise to the top of a male-dominated industry.
A Fort Lauderdale native recently spoke forbes On how she gets the most out of her young crew, the secret strengths of having ADHD, and the leadership lessons she’s extracted for her new book, Calm or Storm: Leadership Lessons from Women at the helm.
To get here, she had to deal with the challenges of alcoholism, bankruptcy, despair, heart attack and cancer (discovered in a motorcycle accident). Now, nearly 34 years into her sober life, she adheres to her daily practice to keep herself centered. “I’m an alcoholic, and if I didn’t handle all of them in the past and clean up and redirect, I’m carrying it into the future,” she says.
At the same time, she’s grateful for the opportunity to be a role model. “I want people to know who I used to be,” she says. “I want employers to know that they can invest in someone like me. They will be loyal.”
She also wants young people to know that they should be free to love whoever they want. ,” says Yohn. High school about the industry. “When I was in elementary school, I could have been a lawyer, or a doctor, or a teacher. I want them to say, ‘I can be a captain.'”
