- John Stewart said conversations about Donald Trump shouldn’t have to do with whether he should be indicted.
- “I think the law should always take someone’s popularity into account,” Stewart said sarcastically.
- Instead, the focus should be on finding a system of “consistent accountability,” Stewart said.
Former ‘Daily Show’ host Jon Stewart said he doesn’t care about conversations surrounding whether former President Donald Trump would be a ‘martyr’ if indicted.
Speaking with Farid Zakaria on CNN’s “GPS” on Saturday, Stewart said he was instead focused on finding a system of “consistent accountability.”
Since January, a grand jury in New York has been investigating his relationship with Trump, who paid $130,000 in hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. He could be prosecuted in a week.
Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who testified before a New York grand jury, was sentenced to three years in prison in connection with this payment. Cohen now claims Trump ordered him to pay.
Zakaria asked Stewart, host of Apple TV+’s “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” about whether Trump, who received 74.2 million votes in 2020, should be indicted. mistreated by the judicial system.
“I think the law should always take someone’s popularity into account,” Stewart replied sarcastically. “I mean, what happened to our country? You can’t even commit financial fraud anymore. It seems as if
Stewart later continued, “The idea that someone this wealthy and powerful could be held accountable is outrageous and this country should not support it.”

After concluding his remarks, Stewart explained that the “rule of law” does not take into account that “it might make you a martyr to someone else.”
“What is the law, what exactly did he do, his lawyer was put in prison for several years in the same circumstances. So what is the crime? It is a crime ??” said Stewart.
Stewart also lashed out at the lack of “accountability in our financial system,” citing congressional stock trading as an example.
Following the news of the potential indictment, Trump took to social media to call on his supporters to stand up. Last week, Trump posted on Truth Social warning of “possible death and destruction” if indicted.
A representative for Trump did not immediately respond to an insider’s request for comment.
