A widely shared video of European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde admitting the digital euro will be used in a ‘limited’ way to control the payments people can make has been out for three weeks. Taken from a previous prank video.

The video was picked up by breaking news account Watcher Guru on April 6th and caused quite a stir on social media. In it, Lagarde cited a desire not to rely on “currencies of unfriendly countries” or those provided by “private corporate entities like Facebook and Google.” “I am personally convinced that we must move forward” regarding the digital euro, she said.

The prankster has had similar conversations with other celebrities, including Harry Potter author JK Rowling and former U.S. President George W. Bush.

However, Lagarde noted that the terrorist attacks could, and indeed were, entirely funded by small, anonymous transactions.

The ECB will launch a two-year study on the digital euro in July 2021 and report on its progress.

The investigation is expected to end on September 29, and Lagarde said a decision on whether to launch will be made in October.
